THE CONCEPT AND HISTORY

The recently constructed Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) in Farndon now offers a range of facilities to promote the participation in sports for the local community. The MUGA is operated by Farndon Community Club and has been funded by a combination of fund raising, generous donations and a grant from Sport England.  The idea was conceived following the early deaths of two young and popular members of the community; one whilst playing football, Greg Davenport and Cav Bickley who was at university.

The tennis courts at the Community Club were in a very sorry state so it was decided to site the new MUGA on the existing template rather than build it elsewhere.  This had the advantage that some of the services such as electricity were already in situ although they needed upgrading to meet current standards.

The MUGA consists of two areas, the larger of which has an all-weather surface which is a synthetic grass carpet installed onto a shock absorbent base.  This makes is suitable for high impact sports such as 5-a-side football and netball.  The smaller area is now a dedicated hard tennis court which is marked up both for tennis and netball.

Both these facilities can be hired by the hour by contacting the Club and an on-line booking system will be available shortly.
